Assignment 1-2 Popular culture blog

I think of popular culture as being whatever is the in thing at the time. For example when I was in elementary school the in things were bell bottom pants, Captain Kangaroo, and Weebles. When I was in middle school the hip, cool things were roller skating, parachute pants,Michael Jackson and popped collars . In high school the popular culture trends were big hair, Metallica, and break dancing.
Understanding popular culture is important in the business environment because popular culture influences many aspects of business such as how and where you advertise, what kind of merchandise is sold, and employee relations. In my current occupation I work with youth between the ages of 14-21 so it is very important for me to know and understand what is popular in their culture so I can relate to them better and understand some of the issues that may result from that popular culture. Popular culture will impact my future career because I am planning to go into human resource management so it will be important for me to understand what medium to use to reach and communicate with current and future employees.
The popular culture artifact I have chosen is the laptop computer. I chose the laptop because everyone seems to have one and they have become a staple in our every day lives. Laptops are prevalent in work places, schools and homes because they allow us to be able to access information quickly and they are portable so we don't have to be in a fixed location to use them.

Leigh,

The laptop is a great example of a popular culture artifact. What would we do if we were tied to the traditional PC? Our lives are so busy that most of us would not be able to juggle family, work and school without them!

Leigh,
Laptops are a good example of popular culture! Technology changes so much so fast! Before you were a very lucky person if you had a desktop computer! Now it is the laptop or notebook pc's! My parents still do not have a desktop and they crack me up! My Dad is always asking me to look something up for him and when I say come on over you can do, he freaks out and is like "no,no,no, you do it". My oldest son just turned 8 last weekend and we got him a desktop computer! It is amazing how much he loves it! Now I am just waiting on my laptop! I feel like I am the only one on the planet that doesn't have one! I know it will make my life so much easier once I get it!!!

I agree that laptops are a good example of popular culture. It seems as if everyone has one and I don't know what I would do without mine. It makes things, such as school, much easier because I can connect to the internet without having to sit at my desk in my apartment. Businesses are using laptops much more to increase productivity. A couple months ago I had to have an insurance adjuster come and look at my damaged vehicle. He brought a laptop with him and was able to quickly input everything and give me an exact quote. Much easier than writing everything on paper and having to wait to hear back!
